Government College Umuahia Reunion 5.0 – Celebrating Brotherhood, Legacy and Service
Government College Umuahia, widely regarded as the legendary “Eton of the East,” remains a symbol of academic excellence, discipline, leadership, and intellectual distinction in Nigeria and beyond. Founded in 1929 by Rev. Robert Fisher, the college was modeled after the great British public schools such as Eton and Harrow. Rev. Fisher’s life was one of extraordinary sacrifice and selfless service. Having dedicated his life to nurturing generations of young men, he reportedly gave up all he possessed and retired to an old people’s home, choosing a life of simplicity rather than personal comfort. His greatest legacy was not material wealth but the countless lives he transformed through education, character building, and godly values. Today, we remain beneficiaries of his vision and are forever grateful for the enduring foundation he laid.
I was privileged to join my classmates in our annual Reunion Ritual, a cherished tradition that has endured for the past five years. More than a reunion, it is a celebration of lifelong friendship and the enduring bond of brotherhood that began in 1982 within the walls of our beloved alma mater. Our activities commenced with a solemn candlelight procession in memory of our fallen classmates who have gone to be with the Lord, reminding us that though they are no longer with us physically, they remain forever in our hearts. The following day, we tested our physical fitness, rekindling the spirit of discipline and resilience instilled in us during our school days, before reaching out to the less privileged to bring smiles to their faces through acts of kindness and generosity. The reunion concluded with AGM and a thanksgiving service, where we expressed our profound gratitude to Almighty God for His faithfulness in preserving our lives, granting journey mercies to classmates who travelled from different parts of Nigeria and across the world, and sustaining the friendship and brotherhood that have remained unbroken for over four decades. Indeed, Government College Umuahia continues to produce not only distinguished men but men committed to service, compassion, and excellence. Once an Umuahian, always an Umuahian.
