As Akwa Ibom Moves to Activate International Flight Operations at VAIA

Akwa Ibom State Government has intensified preparations for the commencement of international flight operations at the Victor Attah International Airport, with the Committee on the Actualisation of the Airport’s International Status conducting a comprehensive inspection of facilities ahead of the planned April take-off.
This strategic approach signal a decisive step toward global aviation connectivity for the benefit of the state.
The inspection exercise, led by the Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Committee, Prince Enobong Uwah, is in line with the Governor’s determination to translate the recently approved international status of the airport into full operational reality.
Following the inauguration of the committee by Governor Eno on January 5, the inspection became necessary to evaluate the level of preparedness across critical operational areas and to ensure that all components required for international operations are delivered within the approved timeline.
The over three hours inspection covered key infrastructure and operational facilities, including the access road, terminal building, apron and taxiway, security perimeter fencing, IP intelligence security cameras, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility, vegetation clearing, transformer area and medium-voltage power panels.
These facilities constitute the backbone of international aviation operations, where efficiency, security and uninterrupted power supply are non-negotiable requirements.
Their readiness is essential to guaranteeing seamless passenger processing, aircraft handling and compliance with international aviation protocols.
Beyond its immediate operational significance, the activation of international flights at VAIA positions Akwa Ibom within the growing network of sub-national gateways facilitating global trade, tourism and investment.
Across Africa and emerging economies, regional international airports have become critical enablers of economic diversification, export growth and cross-border mobility.
In Nigeria, airports such as those in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Enugu have demonstrated how international aviation infrastructure can stimulate economic activity, attract foreign investment and deepen regional integration.
Speaking after the inspection, the SSG expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the airport, noting that the progress recorded gives confidence that the April timeline for international operations remains achievable.
He assured that the committee will maintain continuous oversight through periodic inspections to ensure that all outstanding gaps are promptly addressed.
Contractors handling various components of the project, including VKS and Premium Construction Company, were commended for the speed and quality of work delivered so far.
On his part, Engr. Oliver Ebong of VKS, who is responsible for the international terminal, identified areas requiring urgent attention and assured that work on the terminal would be completed by the end of March.
For Akwa Ibom, the activation of international flight operations at VAIA aligns directly with the ARISE Agenda, particularly its focus on infrastructure development, economic expansion and strategic positioning of the state as a destination for business and tourism.
As preparations advance steadily toward the April take-off, the Governor is very intentional on his quest to open the skies of Akwa Ibom to the world, not on promise alone, but on the strength of planning, execution and a deliberate commitment to global standards.
