Ohuhu Welfare Union Youth Wing Secures Lands For Farming, Call For Financial Support From Well Meaning Citizens

In a significant move aimed at revitalizing agricultural practices among Ohuhu youths, the president of Ohuhu Welfare Union’s Youth Wing, Chief Iheanacho Uchenna, has secured over 15 plots of land at Ulonna South Farm Settlement. This achievement comes through the assistance of distinguished entities such as HRM Eze (Buldr) Charles C. Ngwuli, Egwu 2 of Umuegwu Obiohuru Auto Community, Afugiri, RHC Mmerenwanne Egekwuru (TPM) Umuegwu Obiohuru Auto Community, Afugiri, and RHC Engr. Okechukwu Onuoha (PG) Umuegwu Obiohuru Auto Community, Afugiri. The official launch of the “Operation Go Back to Farm” initiative is set for Saturday, April 19, 2025. This program seeks to address the pressing challenges of urban migration, food security, and unemployment by encouraging young people to engage in farming and sustainable agricultural practices.

The initiative aims to reshape the perception of farming as a serious and profitable career choice for young people. By promoting local food production, it seeks to enhance food security within our community. The program intends to provide economic opportunities in rural areas, thereby reducing the trend of youths migrating to urban centers in search of jobs.

Furthermore, the initiative promotes the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices in agriculture, encouraging youth to be responsible stewards of ohuhu land. It plans to organize workshops and training sessions to educate Ohuhu youths on modern farming techniques, pest management, crop rotation, cassava processing and sustainable practices. These training sessions will equip ohuhu youths with essential agricultural techniques and business skills.

To support this initiative, access to seeds, cassava stems, fertilizers, and farming equipment will be facilitated through individual and institutional partnerships with agricultural organizations and government agencies. Experienced farmers will be recruited to mentor our youths, providing guidance and fostering a sense of community. Additionally, the program will create linkages between young farmers and markets to ensure they can sell their produce at fair prices.

We anticipate an overall increase in youth participation in agriculture, leading to economic empowerment and a more sustainable local food system that meets the community’s needs. Enhanced skills and knowledge among young entrepreneurs will foster innovation in agricultural practices. This initiative will strengthen community ties and reduce dependency on urban migration for economic opportunities.

The “Operation Go Back to Farm” initiative by the Ohuhu Welfare Union’s Youth Wing represents a proactive approach to tackling the pressing issues faced by today’s youth. By emphasizing the importance of agriculture and the potentials it holds, this initiative will not only empower the youth but also contribute to the overall well-being of our community.
