Remove cultural, religious and political roadblocks to women empowerment -PG Ofeme Progressive Union

The President general Ofeme Progressive Union Federated, High Chief Raymond Onyinyechi Ofoegbu have again called for the eradication of cultural, religious, and political impediments to women empowerment in pursuit of social equality and an egalitarian society.
The PG also stressed the need for adequate investment in girl-child education, arguing that this is the surest strategy to having an empowered woman to tackle challenges often faced in society.
These advice are the aggregate submissions made by a panel of three discussants, on the radio advocacy programme, ARISE AGENDA Hour, monitored online on Monday.
The programme which is sponsored by the Igbos in diaspora came on the heels of the 2024 International Women’s Day, where the panelists stated that ARISE AGENDA, remains opposed to some cultural practices, religious dogmas and political statutes that express bias towards women and shackles them from effectively participating in decision making process, religious freedom or political inclusion.
High Chief Raymond Ofoegbu, decried situations where the girl-child appeared to lack behind the boys, saying more needs to be done to bridge the gap in education between female children and their male counterparts, including their rights to inheritance and leadership positions in society. He argued that all notions or practices that disempowers women should be condemned.
On his part, Eze Ifeanyi Godwin Anyaogu said education is key to making the woman aware of her rights and preparing her for a future role in caring for her family and contributing to national development in all ramifications. He therefore called for mindset shift for those who feel dissatisfied in only having female children, advising that investing in them can never be regretted.
Eze Anyaogu, a member of the Igbo speaking community leaders in Lagos State who doubles as an ARISE AGENDA ambassador, however called for stiffer penalties against gender based violence and rape, stressing that the laws should be strengthened to protect women in the society against deprivation and abuse.
He commended the team of ARISE AGENDA for championing the cause of attitudinal change in matters relating to women in particular and lauded President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, governor Alex Chioma Otti for being gender friendly and giving vast opportunities to women in his administration.
