Senate Committed to Strengthening FCT as ‘Mini Nigeria’, says Senator Ekong Sampson
The Nigerian Senate has assured of its commitment to strengthening the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) as ‘a mini Nigeria’. It said the FCT must continue to remain as a centre of unity and a melting point for all Nigerians.
This was contained in a message of goodwill delivered by Senator Ekong Sampson, Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, at the flag-off of distribution of palliatives to indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory, held at the Art and Culture Exhibition Centre, Area 10, Abuja, yesterday.
Senator Ekong Sampson, speaking on behalf of the Senate Committee on FCT, relayed the warm wishes of the Committee on FCT and by extension, the leadership of the Nigerian Senate to the FCT administration and assured that the nation’s upper Legislative House will continue to partner with the FCT administration towards the development and sustenance of the Abuja Master Plan.
Senator Sampson lauded the Ministry of FCT for starting on a strong note, adding that the palliatives will go a long way to providing succour to indigenes of the FCT, in the face of the current socioeconomic realities.
In her speech, just before she flagged-off the distribution exercise, Minister of State, FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud urged FCT residents to exercise prudence in their daily lives as the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was committed to implementing measures that would stabilize prices, encourage economic growth, promote prosperity and well-being for citizens.
Dr. Mahmoud said that the Federal Government was exploring more avenues to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal. The FCT Deputy Minister assured that every deserving family in the six area councils and 17 chiefdoms of FCT will receive the food items free of charge. The first tranche of the palliatives for FCT resident included 17,222 bags of rice and 8,400 bags of maize.
Present at the flag-off ceremony were the Secretary, Agriculture & Rural Development Secretariat of the FCT, Alhaji Lawan Kolo Geidem, Chairman of ALGON, FCT and the Executive Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Danladi Chiya, the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Yunusa, among other big wigs of the FCT administration.
