Senator Austin Akobundu Commissions Ahiaeke Ehume Market, Pledges to Attract a Health Center
In a heartwarming event which brought smiles to the faces of the people of Ehume Autonomous Community, Umuahia South LGA, the Distinguished Senator representing Abia Central, Senator Austin Akobundu, today 11th January 2025, officially commissioned the Ahiaeke Ehume Market. The market, built by Engr. Dr. Humphrey C. Benson under the auspices of Enyioha Foundation, features 45 open shops which will provide functional space for traders to thrive.
Addressing the crowd, Senator Akobundu described the project as a transformative initiative that would enhance the economic prospects of the community. “This is indeed a very laudable project—one that will boost the economy of this community,” he stated. “I must appreciate the thoughtfulness of the founder of the Enyioha Foundation, Engr. Dr. Humphrey C. Benson. It is not everyone that has the heart of the community, but Engr. Humphrey has consistently demonstrated his love for his people through impactful initiatives like this.”
The Senator emphasized the importance of taking collective responsibility for the market’s upkeep to ensure its long-term success and sustainability. “This market is not just a symbol of progress; it is a resource that will provide opportunities for trade and economic growth for years to come. This is not just a necessity, but a vital priority that cannot be overlooked, as access to quality healthcare is fundamental for the growth and development of any community.” The Senator, with a strong sense of purpose and compassion, continued, “I want to use this platform to make a heartfelt pledge to you today, that by the special grace of God, I will work relentlessly and with utmost dedication to ensure that a health center is attracted to this community—one that will not only serve the immediate needs of the people but also stand as a symbol of progress, well-being, and a brighter future for all.” He said.
He urged community leaders to take immediate steps in identifying a suitable location for the health center, promising to work tirelessly to make it a reality. “Through effective representation, together with the strength and wisdom of God, I will continue to strive to attract impactful projects to make Abia Central better,” he concluded.
The commissioning ceremony was a celebration of service and philanthropy, as the community honored the Distinguished Lawmaker with an award for his selfless contributions to the Senatorial District. The Regent of the community, Super High Chief S.I. Uwagbokwu, led the presentation, acknowledging the Senator’s exceptional leadership and dedication to the welfare of his people.
In his remarks, the founder of Enyioha Foundation, Engr. Humphrey Benson, narrated his passion for community development, and what has inspired him thus far. He gave out two wheelchairs, and further pledged to enhance the market’s functionality by building 80 additional tables by June, ensuring a more conducive environment for trade.
As a gesture of support, the Distinguished Senator, through the Enyioha Foundation, distributed aprons and bags to the market women. This thoughtful initiative was symbolically aimed at equipping them with essential tools for their daily trade, while also showing appreciation for their contributions to the community’s economic growth.
