Real Reason I Reintroduced Old National Anthem — Tinubu Finally Opens Up
President Bola Tinubu has responded to critics questioning his administration’s decision to revert to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
Addressing the leadership of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, May 30, President Tinubu emphasised that reinstating the old anthem is a priority for his administration.
Ibom Focus reported that President Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill into law on Wednesday, May 29, thereby replacing the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” with “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
This move has sparked a mixed reaction among Nigerians, labelling it a “misplaced priority” amid the numerous pressing challenges facing the country.
Defending his decision, President Tinubu stated that he aligns with the lawmakers’ intention to revert to the original anthem.
He highlighted the importance of following the legislative process and respecting the law.
“Let me allude to something that happened yesterday. The change of national anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’,” Tinubu said.
“Some people say, ‘Is that your priority?’ It’s my priority. I agree with the National Assembly. If they make law, I’ve got to obey that law, or we disagree openly and close the chapter.”
Addressing concerns over national identity and diversity, President Tinubu drew a parallel with the country’s name, which was also given by colonial powers.
“But the question of diversity. Who gave us the name Nigeria? Is it not Britain? Or somewhere? Have we changed our name? We are Nigerians. Our passport shows that,” he remarked.
