It was an Error, Tenure Of Local Government Mayors, Councilors Remains Four Years —Abia Assembly Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini (Ugolee), has set the record straight regarding the tenure of elected mayors and councillors in local government administration, affirming that their tenure remains four years, not two.

Addressing concerns that surfaced over an alleged two-year tenure in the bill currently under consideration, Rt. Hon. Meregini, who also serves as the House Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity, and official Spokesperson of the 8th Assembly, emphasized that any mention of a two-year term was a mistake.

He reassured the public that Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, is a leader who upholds integrity and does not shift the goalpost midway.

“The fact is that whoever may have seen two years in that bill should know it was an error. I have laid it to rest now by clarifying that the tenure is four years.

“The world should know that Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, is not the kind of man inclined to altering established standards. The tenure remains four years—this is confirmed and ascertained,” the Deputy Speaker stated.

He further noted that the bill has only passed its second reading and is expected to move to the committee stage next week, where the details will be further deliberated and clarified.

“I have spoken to some radio stations, and I am using this medium to reinforce that once this bill is passed into law, the tenure will officially be four years, not two,” Rt. Hon. Meregini affirmed.
