The Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, has charged the newly inaugurated 32nd Students’ Union Government (SUG) Executive Council to promote unity, uphold discipline and lead with integrity in advancing students’ welfare and the image of the University.

Speaking during the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of the 2026/2027 SUG Executive Council, the Vice-Chancellor described the student leaders as a vital link between students and University Management, urging them to maintain effective communication through the Dean of Student Affairs for prompt resolution of students’ concerns.

Prof. Akanwa reaffirmed her administration’s open-door policy and encouraged constructive dialogue, while cautioning against unlawful protests, confrontations and actions capable of disrupting the peaceful academic environment of the University.

She further charged the new executives to discourage cultism, examination malpractice, vandalism, drug abuse and other forms of misconduct, stressing the need for them to lead by example through character, integrity and selfless service. She also commended the outgoing 31st SUG Executive Council for their contributions and challenged the new leadership to make their tenure memorable through innovation, inclusiveness and commitment to students’ welfare.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that the University Management has concluded plans for the phased renovation of students’ hostels during the long vacation to provide a more conducive living environment. She urged students to maintain cleanliness, protect University facilities and complete their course registration within the stipulated period.

In his address, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Ralph Iheke, described leadership as a call to service, stressing that the SUG is not a platform for personal gain but an avenue to serve and protect the image of the University. He encouraged the outgoing executives to support and guide the new leadership for a successful tenure.

The inauguration and swearing-in ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, marked the official commencement of the tenure of the 2026/2027 32nd Students’ Union Government Executive Council.
