SKILL ACQUISITION IS THE KEY TO AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT – REP. CLEMENT JIMBO
The Honourable Member Representing the industrious people of Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency in the Nigerian House of Representatives, Rep. Clement Jimbo on Saturday 14th October, 2023 reiterated that Africa can only develop as sister continents when every citizen acquire skills to stimulate the economy of Africa.
The Federal Lawmaker made the remarks while speaking as a panelist on the theme “COLLABORATION FOR JOB CREATION IN AFRICA” at the Day 2 of the AFRICA JOB CREATION AND TRADE CONFERENCE at the National Women Development Centre, Abuja.
Speaking through one of his Legislative Aides, Pastor Ubong Akpan, Rep. Jimbo pointed that Africa cannot meet up other continents of the World if they refused to acquire blue skills to create jobs for the rising population.
Africa’s citizens must take responsibility for their own economic progress, rather than relying on government assistance or engaging in counterproductive behaviors such as begging. The key to economic development lies in the creation of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which can create jobs and spur economic growth. This will require a shift in mindset, with a focus on acquiring skills and becoming self-reliant rather than relying on others. With a concerted effort, Africa’s citizens can break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Hon. Jimbo highlighted the significant disparity in economic growth between Africa and other regions. He noted that Africa has fallen behind other parts of the world, and stressed the need for action from its citizens to drive economic growth. He emphasized that while governments and the African Union can provide support, it is ultimately up to individuals to take action and create change. This may involve starting small businesses, investing in local industries, and supporting improvements in infrastructure and education. With a concerted effort from all involved, Africa can achieve its full potential and close the gap with other regions.
Comparing Africa to other continents such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Asia, it is evident that there are several areas in which Africa is lagging behind. Therefore, this conference should serve as a call to action for all Africans to work together to enact the change that is necessary. While the government has an important role to play, it is the collective efforts of all citizens that will bring about meaningful change. Rep. Jimbo submitted.
