The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party on Saturday 23rd May 2026 witnessed what many party faithful described as a historic “gathering of giants” as leaders, stakeholders, elected officials, aspirants, business leaders and supporters of the party converged at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, in a grand show of solidarity, unity and financial commitment towards strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The extraordinary stakeholders and leaders meeting, which attracted top political figures and party stakeholders from across the state, turned into a strategic political gathering focused on repositioning the Labour Party into what leaders described as “a truly dominant ruling party” in Abia State.
The atmosphere at the venue was electrifying as party faithful from different political blocs and support groups openly pledged loyalty, financial support and renewed commitment towards sustaining the Labour Party structure that brought the current administration to power in the state.
Addressing the gathering, the Abia State Chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Peter Azubuike, delivered a passionate speech where he stressed the urgent need for stakeholders to stop leaving the burden of sustaining the party solely on the shoulders of Governor Alex C. Otti .
Azubuike maintained that while Governor Otti had made enormous sacrifices to stabilize and sustain the party during difficult periods, the time has come for all elected officials, stakeholders and loyal members to collectively take ownership of the party and ensure that the party is active.
According to him, the Labour Party cannot continue to describe itself as a ruling party only in words while lacking the necessary visibility, infrastructure and operational strength expected of a dominant political movement.
