Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has strengthened its visibility on the global research map, emerging among the Nigerian universities featured in the October 2026 edition of the AD Scientific Index, a research-based ranking platform that tracks the scholarly performance and impact of scientists and academic institutions worldwide.

In the latest ranking, MOUAU is placed 31st among Nigerian universities, 173rd in Africa and 3,633rd globally, reflecting the growing presence of the University’s scholars in the international research ecosystem. The University recorded a total H-index of 3,316, with 470 indexed academic staff, according to the ranking data.

The ranking comes at a time when MOUAU is increasingly positioning research, innovation and knowledge application at the centre of its institutional transformation. Under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, the University has continued to emphasize research visibility, strategic partnerships, innovation and the translation of academic knowledge into solutions that address societal and economic challenges.

The October ranking also places MOUAU within the broader expansion of Nigeria’s research footprint. A report on the latest AD Scientific Index noted that Nigeria was ranked 48th among 221 countries and third in Africa, with more than 53,000 scientists indexed. The report further observed that the number of Nigerian universities represented in the ranking has expanded substantially in recent years, underscoring the increasing international visibility of the country’s research community.

For MOUAU, the development provides another international reference point for its research activities and the scholarly contributions of its academics. The AD Scientific Index draws substantially from publicly available scholarly records, including Google Scholar profiles, and uses indicators such as the H-index, i10-index and total citations to assess researchers’ scientific impact.

The latest recognition adds to a series of recent international visibility milestones recorded by MOUAU. The University made its debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, where it was placed in the 2,001+ global band, while it also secured recognition in the 2026 THE Sustainability Impact Ratings during its first participation.

With research impact increasingly becoming a critical measure of institutional relevance in the global university system, the latest AD Scientific Index appearance offers MOUAU another platform to showcase the work of its scholars. It also reinforces the University’s continuing drive to convert research strength into innovation, partnerships and practical solutions in agriculture, food security, technology and other areas central to its mandate.
