Accountability Before Political Battles: Constituents Deserve Answers, Not Distractions

The recent exchange of words between Hon. Obi Aguocha and his political opponents has once again drawn public attention to the politics of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency. While political debates are an essential part of democracy, many constituents are beginning to ask a fundamental question: Are political quarrels the most important issue facing the people at this critical moment?
Across communities in Ikwuano and Umuahia, families are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship. The cost of food continues to rise, transportation expenses have become unbearable for many households, businesses are struggling to survive, and unemployment remains a major concern for thousands of young people.
At a time when citizens are looking for solutions, accountability and visible representation, political exchanges and media confrontations should not be the primary focus of elected leaders. The people deserve answers to pressing questions that affect their daily lives.
One issue that continues to generate public concern is the distribution of palliatives reportedly provided by the Federal Government to assist Nigerians during difficult economic conditions. Among these palliatives was rice intended to cushion the hardship being experienced by ordinary citizens.
Today, many constituents are still asking: What happened to the rice allocated to Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency?
This question is not motivated by politics. It is motivated by accountability.
The people deserve a transparent explanation regarding the quantity of rice received, the distribution process, the communities that benefited and the criteria used in selecting beneficiaries. If public resources were allocated for the welfare of citizens, then citizens have every right to know how those resources were managed.
Transparency is not a favour from elected officials; it is an obligation.
The absence of clear information naturally creates concerns and speculation among the public. The best way to address such concerns is through openness, documentation and verifiable records. Constituents deserve a complete breakdown of the distribution process so that confidence in public institutions can be strengthened.
Beyond the issue of palliatives, there is an even more important conversation that must take place. The people deserve a detailed account of the performance of their representative in the National Assembly.
Hon. Obi Aguocha was elected to represent the interests of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency at the highest level of legislative decision-making. Therefore, constituents are entitled to know the measurable outcomes of that representation.
How many bills has he sponsored?
How many motions has he successfully moved on the floor of the House of Representatives?
What federal projects have been attracted to the constituency since he assumed office?
How many roads, schools, healthcare centres, water projects and rural electrification projects have been facilitated through his office?
How many youths have benefited from employment opportunities, empowerment programmes and skills acquisition initiatives linked to his representation?
How many students have benefited from scholarships, educational support programmes and other interventions?
What specific benefits have traders, farmers, women and vulnerable groups received as a result of his legislative activities?
These are questions that deserve detailed answers supported by facts and evidence.
Unfortunately, many citizens believe that too much attention is being devoted to political battles while pressing developmental issues remain unresolved. The people are not interested in endless political exchanges. They are interested in results.
This is not the time for political distractions.
This is not the time for beer parlour politics.
This is not the time for social entertainment and unnecessary political confrontations.
This is not the time for activities that do not directly improve the welfare of the people.
This is the time for leadership.
This is the time for accountability.
This is the time for effective representation.
This is the time for attracting federal projects, creating opportunities for young people, supporting local businesses, improving infrastructure and addressing the genuine concerns of constituents.
The office of a member of the House of Representatives is one of immense responsibility. It is a platform for service, not self congratulation. It is a platform for performance, not political distractions. It is a platform for delivering measurable benefits to the people.
The people of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency deserve more than political rhetoric. They deserve a transparent scorecard. They deserve answers. They deserve accountability. Most importantly, they deserve representation that focuses on their welfare rather than political quarrels.
History will not judge leaders by the statements they make against opponents. History will judge them by the lives they improve, the opportunities they create and the legacy of development they leave behind.
The time has come for facts to replace rhetoric, for accountability to replace excuses and for performance to take precedence over political battles.
That is what the people deserve.
